Phoenix man sentenced in murder of pregnant girlfriend and her roommate

  • November 7, 2025

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A Valley man convicted of murdering his estranged pregnant girlfriend, her roommate and then kidnapping her two children will spend the rest of his life in prison.

On Friday, Prosecutors announced the sentencing for Dimas Coronado Chafino who was convicted in the 2018 murders of his estranged girlfriend, Oralia Nuñez, and her roommate, Omar Gonzalez, as well as the kidnapping of the estranged couple’s two young sons.

In the early morning hours on September 1st, officers responded to a home in the area of 35th Avenue and Van Buren Street, where they found Oralia and Omar shot multiple times.

Oralia was 24 weeks pregnant at the time of her death.

Prosecutors said officers were familiar with the home and Chafino due to repeated calls involving Order of Protection violations and threats made by Chafino against Nuñez.

Following the murders, investigators discovered that Chafino had kidnapped the couple’s sons and driven to Mexico. At that point, an Amber Alert was activated for the two children who were later located unharmed in Mexico.

During the search for Chafino and their children, Nuñez’s family told Arizona’s Family that the relationship was violent from the start and that Chafino had allegedly hit and slapped her multiple times.

In February 2020, Chafino was arrested in Mexico and later extradited to Phoenix to face charges.

Chafino was found guilty of the following charges:

  • Three counts of first degree Murder, a class one felony
  • Two counts of kidnapping, a class two felony
  • One count of first-degree burglary , a class two felony
  • One count of interfering with Judicial Proceedings, a class one misdemeanor

“Domestic violence is one of the most dangerous and devastating crimes we see,” said County Attorney Rachel Mitchell. “This case shows the tragic cost when threats escalate, and victims are not safe in their own homes. Two lives, and an unborn child, were stolen leaving two young boys to forever live with that loss. This sentence ensures justice is served, but our community must continue to do everything possible to protect families from this kind of violence.”
