A Houston-based travel service is having its best week ever, and it has nothing to do with airplanes. Here’s what frustrated Texas travelers are choosing instead.
HOUSTON — A Texas-based luxury bus service is experiencing a significant surge in customers as travelers seek alternatives to air travel amid ongoing flight disruptions, according to the company’s CEO.
Vonlane, which operates routes between Houston, Dallas and other Texas cities, has seen business increase 31% over the previous week. The company attributes the growth directly to government shutdown impacts and flight reductions that have created widespread uncertainty at airports.
The service offers a premium travel experience with meals, snacks and alcoholic beverages, charging approximately $247 for a round trip to Dallas. While more expensive than standard bus travel, the fare can be cheaper than airline tickets and eliminates airport complications. The Houston-Dallas trip is 3 hours and 45 minutes each way.
“A lot of anecdotal stories that get to me from our attendants are that some folks are at the airport, have multiple delays, and decide to quote, give up and give us a call, and they get on our next departure,” the CEO said.
The company launched its Houston to Dallas route about 10 years ago and has since expanded service to additional Texas cities.
The shift away from air travel is affecting other transportation sectors as well. Hertz reports one-way car rentals are up 20%. With gas prices currently relatively low, driving has become an increasingly attractive option for travelers.
The transportation disruptions come as airlines continue to manage reduced flight schedules, leaving passengers searching for more reliable ways to reach their destinations.
