1. North Texas officials urge water safety ahead of July 4 weekend

As North Texans prepare to celebrate the Fourth of July, fire rescue officials are issuing a strong warning: stay safe on the water. 

A recent surge in drownings across the region has first responders on high alert heading into one of the busiest weekends of the year for local lakes.

2. Documents show coordination between DOJ, Texas AG to kill Texas Dream Act

On June 4, the U.S. Department of Justice sued the Lone Star State over the Texas Dream Act, a law which allowed some undocumented students to qualify for in-state tuition. Six hours later, a North Texas judge found the law unconstitutional.

According to emails obtained through an open records request, two weeks before the law was overturned, on May 21, the Justice Department and Texas Office of the Attorney General were exchanging emails about the lawsuit.

3. DHS to construct 17 miles of water barrier in Rio Grande

The Department of Homeland Security is planning to construct 17 miles of water barriers in the Rio Grande.

According to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the barriers will be constructed in Cameron County, Texas’ southern-most county in the state.

  • A Capitol Fourth, 45th 4th of July concert to celebrate Independence Day, broadcast on PBS. Hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro, the lineup includes Jack Everly, The National Symphony Orchestra, The Choral Arts Society of Washington, Patrick Lundy & The Ministers of Music, The U. S. Army Trumpets, The U. S. Army Chorus, and the United States Army Band Pershing’s Own
