Illinois State Police advised of an “extended” closure after a fatal crash shut down a portion of Interstate 290 in Chicago’s western suburbs, authorities said.

State police, writing in a post on X at 2:37 p.m. on Sunday, said troopers were on the scene of a serious crash along I-290 westbound near North Avenue in Elmhurst. All westbound lanes of the interstate were shut down, and drivers were advised to seek an alternate route.

The I-294 southbound ramp to I-290 westbound was also closed, state police said.

Video captured by an NBC Chicago photographer at the scene showed major backups in the area.

State police said at approximately 2:01 p.m., a collision occurred involving two vehicles. Three people were taken to area hospitals with unspecified injuries.

One of those injured later died at the hospital, authorities said.

Additional information wasn’t immediately available.
