NEW YORK (PIX11) — As thousands of flights were canceled nationwide on Sunday amid the Federal Aviation Administration’s mandated reductions, New York City area airports felt the change more than most, according to FlightAware.

The tri-state area felt the impact of flight reductions across the U.S. as cancellations eclipsed the 2,000 mark.

Since the mandated reductions came down from the FAA due to staffing shortages in air traffic control towers, Newark, LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports have seen ground delays, ground stops and cancellations pile up daily.

How many flights were canceled on Sunday in NYC?

Newark and LaGuardia were some of the most-affected airports on Sunday, according to FlightAware’s cancellation tracker.

As of 7 p.m., 179 flights out of Newark were canceled, trailing only Chicago’s O’Hare Airport and Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. LaGuardia was right behind Newark with 135 cancellations. JFK had 40 flights cancelled, which was still in the top 15 in the country.

How many flights coming to NYC were canceled?

Similar to the number of flights leaving New York City, Newark and LaGuardia had the third-and fourth-most flights canceled coming into their respective airports.

LaGuardia had 146 flights canceled as the destination airport, and Newark saw 181 flight cancellations. 47 flights were canceled coming into JFK.
