You just have to know where to look and what to ask.
HOUSTON — Many older adults are unknowingly missing out on hundreds of dollars in savings each year, simply because they don’t ask. From airfare and groceries to phone bills, senior discounts are more common than many realize, but few take advantage of them.
Ophelia Pujol, a Houston-area senior, has seen prices change a lot over the years but admitted she doesn’t often ask about discounts.
When KHOU 11 asked why, Pujol replied, “I don’t know, because I didn’t know.”
That’s a familiar story, according to The Senior List, an online resource for older adults. Many seniors simply aren’t aware of the savings available to them.
Once Pujol started asking, she quickly discovered how much she’d been missing. Calling United Airlines about a flight to Colorado, she identified herself as a senior and received a discounted fare, saving around $500 on her round-trip ticket.
“Oh my God. Wow. That’s wonderful,” Pujol said.
She also learned Kroger offers seniors 10% off on select days.
“At this point, every bit adds up,” Pujol said.
Even her cell phone carrier offered her a senior plan that could drop her bill from $82 to $62 a month.
When asked if she planned to call her carrier, Pujol didn’t hesitate.
“Yes, ma’am. You bet,” Pujol said.
Whether it’s travel, groceries, or phone service, Pujol’s experience shows that when it comes to senior savings, sometimes all you’ve got to do is ask.
