SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — Expansion of Valley freeways is continuing as the Phoenix area sees rapid growth.
A new southbound lane of the Loop 101 Pima Freeway opened on Monday between Princess Drive and Shea Boulevard in Scottsdale. Last week, a new northbound lane opened in the same area.
With the two additional lanes, the Loop 101 between Princess and Shea now has four general traffic lanes and an HOV lane in both directions.
Southbound lanes were closed over the weekend for crews to place pavement markings and finish work on the new lane in preparation for its opening on Monday.

The new lanes are part of an ongoing $108 million project by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to widen the Loop 101. The project is expected to add traffic capacity and enhance safety, among other improvements.
The Loop 101 project started in January 2024 and is scheduled to be completed early in 2026, ADOT says.
