PHOENIX — Police are investigating a hit-and-run in west Phoenix that left a man dead on Sunday night.

The Phoenix Police Department identified the man who was killed in the collision as 45-year-old Mark Joseph Knapp.

According to Phoenix PD, officers responded to the area of 35th Avenue and Roosevelt Street for reports of a collision involving a male pedestrian around 9:42 p.m.

When police arrived on scene, they reportedly found Knapp in critical condition. The Phoenix Fire Department took Knapp to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

According to detectives, preliminary information suggests that Knapp was in a crosswalk on the north side of the intersection, walking eastbound against the light when he was struck by the car.

The vehicle was reportedly traveling northbound on 35th Avenue.

Police said they were able to find the vehicle north of where the collision took place, but that it was unoccupied.
