Wave Chasers unites San Diego women through bodyboarding, growing from five to over 100 members in two decades.
ENCINITAS, Calif. — A women’s bodyboarding group called the Wave Chasers is making waves in San Diego, bringing together women of all ages to enjoy the ocean and form lasting friendships. The group, which meets three times a week at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas and other beaches, has grown from five members to over 100 in the past two decades.

“Sometimes literally up and down the coast,” said Lori Nickerson, 71, describing the group’s adventures along the San Diego shoreline.
Lori sees bodyboarding as a team sport.
“You know, coming along and getting into the water is kind of not fun, but you know, people are going to show up. Look at this, this is a normal day,” Nickerson said.
The Wave Chasers have become a familiar sight to local lifeguards.
“The lifeguards- they know us because we are such a big group, they are always looking for us,” said Kate Larson, who finds comfort in the group setting when facing her fears in the water.

For many members, the Wave Chasers offer more than just a chance to catch waves. Dora Clifford, 67, who moved to San Diego without knowing anyone, found a welcoming community.
“I thought, that sounds like fun,” Clifford said.
The group’s oldest member is 92-year-old Teruko Fong, who laughs in the face of age-related stereotypes.
“…But having fun,” Fong said when asked about her participation.
The Wave Chasers welcome women of all abilities, including those with physical challenges. Charise Miller, who was born with Cerebral Palsy, offers words of encouragement.
“Don’t give up, you can do what you put your mind and heart into,” she said.

Every 15 minutes, the group celebrates with a “Party Wave,” showcasing the camaraderie that defines the Wave Chasers.
Brindan Byrne highlights the group’s laid-back atmosphere: “You don’t need make-up, you don’t need to comb your hair.”
The Wave Chasers is free to join and open to all women. Those interested in participating can email Fran at slcfran@aol.com for more information.
As one enthusiastic member summed up the experience: “There is nothing more fun, I just love it, yay.”
