Sydney Sweeney has developed something of a checkered reputation when it comes to box office success, especially after starring in the colossal bomb, Eden. However, while she was still rising to stardom early last year, she made her superhero debut in a critically maligned Marvel Sony bomb that just got a devastating streaming update. Sweeney stars alongside Dakota Johnson (Materialists) and Isabela Merced (The Last of Us) in Madame Web, which tells the origin story for the titular character. Madame Web has been streaming on Netflix for a while now, along with other Sony Marvel products, but the streamer has confirmed that the last day to watch the film will be on November 13.
From the time the first trailer for Madame Web surfaced online, fans were extremely skeptical about the Spider-Man spin-off movie. Jared Leto’s Morbius had destroyed any goodwill the franchise earned with Tom Hardy’s Venom movies. The film earned an abysmal 10% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 53% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter, making it the lowest-rated movie of Sweeney’s career. It also struggled at the box office under the weight of its $80 million budget, earning only $100 million. It’s estimated to have lost Sony between $50 and $100 million.
Matt Sazama, Burt Sharpless, Claire Parker, and S.J. Clarkson wrote the script for Madame Web, with Clarkson also stepping behind the camera to direct. The film was followed by Kraven the Hunter, another critically panned bomb for Sony starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Russell Crowe. It has been reported that the Sony Marvel universe has been put on ice for now, which isn’t surprising, considering it never found any success outside of Tom Hardy’s Venom movies. Having a Spider-Man in a universe full of Spider-Man-adjacent characters probably would have helped.
When Does Sydney Sweeney’s Next Movie Come Out?
Sydney Sweeney’s latest movie, Christy, is now playing in theaters everywhere, and her final movie of 2025 will arrive on December 19. Like Madame Web, it’s also struggling at the box office. Sweeney will star alongside Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar in The Housemaid, the twisty thriller based on the novel of the same name. Next year, she’ll also be seen reprising her signature role as Cassie in Euphoria Season 3, and she’s even been tapped to star in several upcoming adaptations that are all in early stages of development.
Be sure to watch Madame Web before it leaves Netflix on November 13 and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
