Drivers headed eastbound on Interstate 10 will soon have an easier connection to both directions of Loop 1604. Two major flyover ramps will open on Monday — part of a massive interchange update at the juncture of two of the city’s busiest thoroughfares.

Leading up to that, traffic may be brutal this weekend.

Roughly a quarter of a million drivers pass through the Loop 1604 and I-10 interchange each day, providing access to La Cantera, The Rock, The Rim, Valero headquarters and hospitals, University of Texas at San Antonio’s main campus, Six Flags Fiesta Texas, Topgolf and other shopping and dining.

Expect closures running eastbound on I-10, and going both directions on the frontage roads of Loop 1604 as work is completed between La Cantera Parkway and Lockhill Selma Road.

Westbound I-10 and both directions of Loop 1604 are expected to stay open.

During the day, from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, the two right mainlanes, the frontage road via La Cantera to Loop 1604, and the frontage road from La Cantera Parkway to Via La Cantera on eastbound I-10 will be closed.

The eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road right lane from La Cantera Parkway to Valero Way and Valero Way intersection will also be closed.

Overnight, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., additional closures will take place on the westbound I-10 to eastbound Loop 1604 flyover ramp.

Maps of the work schedule can be found here.

TxDOT warned the closures could add significant drive time to commutes this weekend.

The overhaul at Interstate 10 and Loop 1604 comes as the old “cloverleaf” style interchange was deemed incompatible with the area’s massive traffic volume, paving the way for a upgraded five-level interchange with new modern flyovers taller than a 10-story office tower.

So far seven of the flyovers have been completed since December. An eighth and final flyover is expected to open in 2026.
