BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) – An apparent meteor was captured on a home security camera in Gulfport Thursday evening.
James Short sent in a video of what appears to be a shooting star streaking across the sky in Gulfport off Cardinal Lane. He says the incident occurred around 8:25 p.m.
Around the same time, a phone call to the WLOX Newsroom reported seeing a green streak of light in the sky.
While it is not certain that this was a meteor, the timing coincides with one of the most famous meteor showers known.
The Leonid Meteor Shower peaks every November when the earth passes through the dust of comet Tempel-Tuttle.
According to NASA, the meteor shower is active November 3-December 2, 2025.
So it is not unheard of to see an uptick in meteor sightings over the next few weeks.
The peak will occur Sunday night into early Monday morning, November 16-17, 2025.
Weather pending, about 3 meteors per hour will be visible. However, under optimal conditions, up to 10-15 meteors per hour are possible away from any light pollution and clear atmospheric conditions.
So, for best viewing, head out of the city limits and head to a dark place to try and catch a glimpse of shooting stars.
