A man is dead after being shot by a Cedar Hill police officer following a chase Thursday afternoon.

According to police, at about 2 p.m. on U.S. Highway 67, officers were in pursuit of a driver in a U-Haul moving van who was believed to be impaired.

The driver refused to stop and led police on a chase into Dallas.

Video recorded by people on the highway showed a person driving a U-Haul speeding and trying to elude officers by driving on grassy embankments.

At about 2:15 p.m., the man behind the wheel stopped near the intersection of Town Creek Drive and Glen Oaks Boulevard in Dallas and ran toward a wooded area.

Cedar Hill police said an officer fired at the man, fatally wounding him. Police have not confirmed or released any other information about the shooting, including what led the officer to fire or whether the other man was armed.

Michael Christopher told NBC 5 he grew up in the area and was outside talking with his father when the chase entered his neighborhood. Christopher said he saw the U-Haul “barrelling down Rockport going over the speedbumps at about 40 to 50 mph” and worried the van’s brakes were not working.

Christopher said the man then stopped the U-Haul, got out of the vehicle and looked like he might surrender to police but then made a panicked decision to run into the woods toward the creek. A few moments later, Christopher said he heard an exchange of gunfire.

“I heard the officers say something to the effect of ‘hands up’ or ‘drop the weapon,'” Christopher said. “After that, I heard about eight rapid-fire gunshots, which I believe came from the suspect. I could not see this because of all the trees. Then after that, I heard three more controlled gunshots that I think came from the officers.”

Christopher said he then saw the officers bring the man out and perform CPR, but that the man died.

Cedar Hill police said no officers were injured in the incident.

The identity of the driver of the U-Haul killed in the shooting will be released after his family has been notified of his death. The only information about the man released by police is that he was a white man.

Cedar Hill police said the officer who killed the man has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, as per standard protocol. The Dallas Police Department Special Investigations Unit, with oversight from the Dallas County Public Integrity Division, is leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
