Northern New York students learned how to save and budget their money this week thanks to a new school program. TrailNorth Credit Union’s student branch is officially open at the Moriah Central School. This is TrailNorth’s second student branch. This comes about a year after conversations on bringing a branch to Moriah began.”It’s exciting that we can deposit things throughout the day if we’re busy after school,” said Alyssa Courtright, one of four student ambassadors for the program. “It’s a lot more convenient.”Students can withdraw up to $50 at a time, and staff can withdraw up to $100. TrailNorth has already opened up four accounts. Many students asked employees Friday about how they could get started.”It’s exciting,” said John Lenhart, chairman of TrailNorth’s board. “It’s an exciting day for the credit union. It’s an exciting day for Moriah. It’s an exciting day for the students because now they’re going to have a chance firsthand, without having to leave the building, to utilize a financial institution.”TrailNorth employees will also be going into classrooms to work one-on-one with students.”Students need to learn how to use money,” said Lenhart. “They need to learn how to save it and spend it. Financial literacy is an important part of education, and they’ll learn skills that, hopefully, they can take with them after graduation.”The school’s superintendent, Bill Larrow, worked with TrailNorth to make this a reality. He has a message for other people considering offering a similar program at their own schools.”It’s a great opportunity to get your students involved early on, learning how to manage their money, learning how to utilize a tracking system, a saving system,” said Larrow. “The earlier you can do this, the better off they’re going to be as they become adults.”Students interested in opening an account only need to bring a form of identification and their Social Security number to the counter. The branch at Moriah Central School will be open on Wednesdays and Fridays.
