The province’s police watchdog is investigating after an 18-year-old man fell to his death in the parking garage of Square One Shopping Centre on Wednesday afternoon.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a news release on Friday that it invoked its mandate as a Peel Regional Police officer was on the scene at the time of the man’s death.
Police were initially called about a man in distress who was going to Square One.
The SIU said an officer located the man in the parking garage around 2:20 p.m.
“A short time later, the man fell from the parking garage to the ground below. First aid was provided, and the man was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the SIU said in its release.
The agency noted an autopsy was conducted on Thursday. It has assigned two investigators and a forensic investigator to the case.
The SIU added that one subject official has been designated. Anyone with information is being asked to contact investigators at 1-800-787-8529.
The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates police conduct that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
