A heavy helicopter operation could impact traffic, leading to the shutdown of some busy areas of downtown Vancouver this weekend for both drivers and pedestrians.
According to the City of Vancouver, there’s going to be temporary road and sidewalk closures around Howe Street and the north end of the Granville Bridge.
The City says that the closure is due to a transport operation in which a helicopter will be transporting a massive 1,135 kg piece of mechanical equipment from 777 Pacific St. to 1335 Howe St.
If the weather permits, the operation will take place between 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16. The closures aren’t expected to last too long.
The City says that the heavy transport operation will require two closures of Howe Street that should last less than five minutes each. The operation will be coordinated by Talon Helicopters Ltd., a charter company based in Richmond.
Heads up! A low-flying helicopter will transport equipment downtown on Sunday from 9:30 – 11am. 🚁
⚠️ Note: Expect helicopter noise & some traffic, sidewalk & parking impacts on the Granville Bridge SB on-ramp & 1200/1300-blocks of Howe St 🚧

Residents will still have access to residences and businesses, but if you live or will be in the area, the City warns that you may experience intermittent helicopter noise. Additionally, there will be temporary street, sidewalk, parking, and traffic impacts.
The Vancouver Police Department will be in the affected downtown areas, directing traffic. The City is advising all members of the public to follow detours and abide by posted “No Parking” and “No Stopping” signs in the area.
There will also be a full street and sidewalk closure of the southbound on-ramp of the Granville Bridge, and there will also be curb lane closure and parking restrictions on the 1200 block of Howe Street.

The City also expects a full street and sidewalk closure, along with parking restrictions on the 1300 block of Howe Street. VPD will be managing the intersection at Howe and Drake streets.
If you’re riding transit during the operation, your service is not expected to be impacted.
