A man accused in a deadly screwdriver stabbing in Phoenix — an attack in which the victim was pinned between two vehicles — has been sentenced.
As part of a plea agreement, 39-year-old Miguel Preciado was given a life sentence on Nov. 14 for the death of 35-year-old Ethan Jaaziel Felix, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office. Preciado had been charged with first-degree murder in the Dec. 27, 2024, incident.
About 7:30 p.m.,on the date of the incident, Preciado intentionally struck Felix while reversing his car, trapping the man’s lower body between the rear ends of the suspect’s and victim’s vehicles, according to charging documents. Preciado was suspected of picking up a screwdriver from off the ground and stabbing Felix multiple times shortly before fleeing the scene, according to court documents.
A seriously injured Felix was found by police and taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead an hour later, according to authorities.
Detectives determined that Felix’s death was intentional based on the timing of Preciado’s vehicle movements and surveillance video showing the suspect watching the victim in the parking lot, according to charging documents.
Investigators located Preciado’s car on Dec. 30 in the desert south of Saguaro National Park near Tucson. Court records said that when authorities found him, he admitted to being involved in a homicide in Phoenix. He later told Phoenix police that “he did not want to believe he stabbed the victim,” according to the court documents.
Preciado, was booked Jan. 1, 2025, in the case.
Preciado told investigators he had been hearing voices for about 10 months before Felix’s death but did not know why he killed him, according to charging documents. The two men did not know each other, though they lived in the same building near 16th Street and Thomas Road in Phoenix, the charging documents said.
