Superman and Peacemaker star Frank Grillo promises he has an even bigger part to play in James Gunn’s Man of Tomorrow sequel.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Grillo discussed the current trajectory of his career, which includes a leading role in the Sylvester Stallone-led Tulsa King before he steps back into the shoes of Rick Flag Sr. for James Gunn’s upcoming Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. “My character, Rick Flag Sr., is a big part of the sequel’s story, so I’m excited about it,” Grillo confirmed.

Grillo made his debut as Rick Flag Sr. in the hit animated Creature Commandos series that premiered on HBO back in 2024. Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, Grillo portrays the storied former soldier turned leader of a team of superpowered monsters, as well as the father of Suicide Squad star Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flag Jr., who was killed by John Cena’s Peacemaker in the film’s 2021 sequel.

Rick Flag Sr. returned in both Superman and Season 2 of Peacemaker, the latter of which saw the character take on a more prominent role than ever before. As of now, Flag Sr. is the acting director of A.R.G.U.S., overseeing the organization’s operations and using his position to get revenge on Peacemaker for killing his son. At the end of Peacemaker Season 2, Flag Sr. is seen convincing his government compatriots to use the secluded dimension known as Salvation as a superhuman prison, with Peacemaker himself becoming its first unwitting inhabitant.

Several other Superman stars have been confirmed as returning for Man of Tomorrow, not the least of which is the current Man of Steel himself, David Corenswet. Alongside Corenswet, Man of Steel will also include appearances by Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El aka Supergirl, and Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders aka Hawkgirl. Fans are also looking forward to the returns of Skyler Gisondo and Wendell Pierce as Jimmy Olsen and Perry White, though their presences in the film could be diminished by their roles in DC Studios’ planned Superman spinoff series.

Just days ago, it was reported that DC Studios is developing a Superman spinoff series that will revolve not around the Man of Steel, but instead the hardworking journalists of the Daily Planet. The series will be led by Skyler Gisondo in a reprisal of his role as Jimmy Olsen from Superman, though neither Brosnahan nor Corenswet appear to be attached to the series. The spinoff will be executive produced by DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran, while American Vandal creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda are signed on to write, direct, and serve as showrunners.

Superman is currently available for streaming on HBO Max.
