On the day before Veterans Day, local veterans and students connected through conversation at the annual Invite a Veteran to School Day at Ossining High School.

Event organizer Ron Whitehead, an art teacher and Army veteran who served in Desert Storm, said the relaxed atmosphere makes it comfortable for the veterans to engage with the students. “It’s not a movie. It’s not, you know, something just written in a book. It’s a living history,” said Whitehead.

Veterans were stationed throughout the library with photographs and military memorabilia, prepared to answer questions and share their experiences. Students learned what the veterans’ lives were like before and during their service in the military, as well as their career paths after serving.

“I thought that hearing a veteran’s story firsthand was very educational,” said junior Antonia Fortuna. “I think it’s just a really great opportunity to get to know some of the veterans and appreciate what they’ve done for us.”

A school year is 180 days, with no two days and no two schools exactly alike. The students differ, the teachers differ, school cultures differ. Here, our photographers find what makes our school days anything but ordinary, the people and programs and events that make a difference, school day in and school day out.
