Arizona photographer creates earrings that double as hearing protection

  • November 17, 2025

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A Valley-based concert photographer is introducing new jewelry that doubles as a way to protect your senses.

Kelly Fox created Plug & Play Jewelry, hybrid earplugs/earrings that aim to protect concertgoers from potential hearing damage while still staying in style.

Fox has worked in the Phoenix music scene for several years and has seen firsthand how loud music can affect her colleagues and friends. But often, she couldn’t find her earplugs during shows.

“I was really diligent about my hearing protection, but it was still a pain,” Fox said. “I was like dropping it and losing it. Getting it in and out of my pocket all night.”

She knows repeatedly buying new earplugs can get expensive. When she created a prototype of earplugs that would stay in place like earrings, she could tell they were going to take off.

“As I went to shows, my coworkers wanted pairs, and so I took some local jewelry classes here in the Valley, developed the product,” she said. “I worked with audiologists. I worked with merchandise companies for bands to kind of create the perfect product.”

The mission of her new jewelry line is to make hearing protection cool. She plans to work with artists on fashion-forward collaborations to eliminate the stigma around wearing earplugs.

She says Plug & Play Jewelry is good for anyone around loud noises: cheer moms, racing fans, gun enthusiasts or even just someone who gets overwhelmed in the grocery store.
