Waris returned fire and hit the suspect, who then barricaded himself inside of an apartment in the building, located at 1046 Thomas S. Boyland St.
Waris suffered wounds to his face “consistent with bird shot pellets being fired from a shotgun” and was rushed to a Brookdale hospital, NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters.
Police busted open a first-floor window, and flew a drone into the apartment, which showed the alleged shooter “lying motionless on the kitchen floor with a shotgun on the floor near him,” Tisch said.

Responders attempted to render aid to the gunman, who has not yet been identified, but he died at the scene.
Police had been called to the address just before 6 a.m. after a 41-year-old man, Leroy Wallace, was found shot in the chest outside, according to police.

While responding to the call for Waris being shot, two other cops from the 73rd precinct were involved in a car crash. Both cops and the driver of the other vehicle suffered minor injuries and were taken to Brookdale hospital.
Waris, a four-year veteran of the force, took his test to become a cop when he was just 19 years old and received his badge at 21, according to Police Benevolent Association President Pattrick Hendry.

“I ask all of our elected leaders to work with us. To support New York Police Officers. Help us make our jobs easier,” Hendry said in a veiled shot at incoming socialist mayor Zohran Mamdani.
“Do not make our jobs hard. Together we can keep New Yorkers safe.”
