Erik Cantu was shot by now former SAPD officer James Brennand back in 2022. Cantu was 17 years old at the time. Brennand was criminally charged and indefinitely suspended following the shooting. Brennand’s trial is slated to begin next month following a delay. Brennand faces charges of aggravated assault by a public servant.
Cantu was sitting in his vehicle at a North Side McDonald’s parking lot eating a hamburger when Brennand approached the vehicle, opened the driver door and ordered Cantu out of the car. In the officer’s body camera video, Cantu looked back at Brennand while holding the hamburger, then backed his car away, hitting the officer with the door. Brennand opened fire several times as the door closed and Cantu drove away.

Since his recovery, Cantu has been arrested four times and charged with evading arrest twice, theft and failure to give information. Cantu was granted probation for seven years, given 200 hours of community service and his driver’s license was suspended for two years.
