SAN ANTONIO – Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai, along with community leaders, is hosting a food security summit today to address ways to help families facing food insecurity.
The summit is the first in a planned series aimed at improving understanding of how Bexar County can support residents in need.
Judge Sakai is partnering with the San Antonio Food Bank and former Feeding America government relations officer Vince Hall. The goal of the summit is to discuss challenges related to food insecurity, set goals, and issue a call to action.
The summit comes after thousands of families were left uncertain about where their next meal would come from following a pause in SNAP benefits during the recent government shutdown. In response, the county and the Food Bank partnered on multiple food drives and resources to assist struggling families.
Eric Cooper, CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank, emphasized the urgency of the issue, especially as the holidays approach:
We were so worried that we’re not going to have enough food to continue to meet that need and be able to provide for Thanksgiving, but we’re in a moment of recovery and restocking,” he said. “For anyone that can help, now is the time. If we’re going to make it happen for families for Thanksgiving, we’ll need donations of nonperishable food items.
