PHOENIX – The Valley is in for another day of scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and possible flooding on Wednesday.

Rain fell across much of the Phoenix area during the overnight and morning hours, leaving roadways wet for commuters.

“We have a weather system that’s still kind of positioned over Southern California, and that’s bringing a lot of moisture up and just causing periodic showers and maybe even some isolated thunderstorms. So, today, we’re looking at just rainy weather,” Chris Kuhlman of the National Weather Service (NWS) in Phoenix told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Wednesday morning.

The storms have the potential to produce intermittent showers throughout the day and potentially into Thursday morning.

Kuhlman said Wednesday’s rainfall totals are expected to range from 0.5 inches to 1 inch in much of the area, with higher amounts possible where thunderstorms develop.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which the NWS uses for the city’s official readings, received nearly 0.2 inches from Tuesday morning through 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Maricopa County flood watch issued after rainy Tuesday

With the ground saturated from Tuesday’s activity, the NWS issued a flood watch for northern Maricopa County and areas further north, including Prescott. The watch runs until 5 p.m. Wednesday for the western part of the covered area and 6 a.m. Thursday for the eastern side.

The Phoenix area, in general, saw about 0.25-0.5 inches of rain on Tuesday, Kuhlman said.

“The higher amounts are more like in the foothills areas, Cave Creek, and in the far West Valley, where upwards of three quarters of an inch to even an inch and a half has fallen near the White Tanks Mountains,” he said. “The highest amounts are in Wickenburg and northwestern in parts of the county, where anywhere from 2 to 3 inches of rain has fallen.”

It was heavy enough in Wickenburg to cause flash flooding that trapped two vehicles. The four occupants were all rescued without injuries.

What’s in the Phoenix weather forecast for the rest of the week?

Looking ahead, the NWS forecast on Wednesday morning included a 20-30% chance for rain each day through Sunday, with temperatures topping out in the 60s.

“It’s essentially 10 degrees below normal through Friday,” Kuhlman said “We’ll see a little bit of moderation in temperatures over the weekend closer to normal, but we’ll probably not even reach 70 degrees until early next week.”
