A 5-year-old boy has died, and an injured man is facing charges after a vehicle-train crash in Haltom City, according to the Fort Worth Police Department.

The crash occurred just before 4 p.m. in the 1500 block of Hickory Drive near Elliot Reeder Road, officials said.

Fort Worth police said the initial investigation has shown that the Dodge Charger the child and driver, later identified as  24-year-old Fabian Riojas, were traveling in was eastbound on Elliot Reeder Road when Riojas disregarded the activated railroad crossing barricades and warning signals. As the vehicle bypassed the barricades and attempted to cross the tracks, it was struck on the passenger side by a TRE Train traveling toward Dallas.

Fort Worth police said the crash happened in Haltom City, but the Charger with the victims inside ended up in Fort Worth.

Fort Worth Fire Department crews provided aid and took the man to a hospital. The 5-year-old boy, Emilio Jacobi Martinez, died at the scene. No injuries were reported among the 43 passengers on the TRE Train, Fort Worth police said.

Fort Worth police said Riojas is now facing a vehicular manslaughter charge. Police didn’t confirm the relationship between the Riojas and the child, but said they are family. Riojas has been booked into the Fort Worth Jail.
