(Des Moines) — State health officials have confirmed the first flu death this fall.
The Iowa Health and Human Services announced Friday an older individual from southwest Iowa is the first influenza-related death of 2025-26 respiratory season. Iowa’s most recent Respiratory Virus Surveillance Report shows the virus at a very low level of activity, and hospitals are currently reporting low patient admission rates. Although flu activity in Iowa is currently low, officials say Iowans can take precautions to keep themselves and their families healthy throughout the respiratory virus season.
State Medical Director Dr. Robert Kruse recommends Iowans stay home when they’re sick in order to prevent the flu from spreading through family members or workplaces. Officials also urge residents to talk to their doctor or other trusted health care providers about vaccinations–especially those with chronic health conditions who might be at a higher risk for serious illness.
