Several North Texas families, including the parents of more than 20 girls from a summer camp, are praying and waiting for answers as first responders search for their loved ones in flooded water.
Officials in Kerr County said 13 people have died in the historic flood along the Guadalupe River. None of the victims has been identified.
The family of 66-year-old Joni Kay Brake and 67-year-old Robert Leroy Brake Sr. said the couple were visiting their youngest adult son and staying in Cabin 47 at an RV park along the Guadalupe River in Kerrville.
The couple’s family said they called the campsite, which confirmed cabins had been swept away.
The Burleson family said the grandparents live in Abilene but have family in North Texas. They’re asking anyone with information to contact them.
Meteorologists said heavy tropical storms dumped as much as 14 inches of rain in the area, causing the Guadalupe River to rise in Hunt to near-record depths overnight. Between 1 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Friday, the river rose from about 7.5 feet to nearly 30 feet – a 22-foot rise in about three hours. The NWS said they think the river was even higher, but that the gauge was underwater and was no longer reporting data.
