CHICAGO (25News Now) – Violence has ruined what should have been festive night in Chicago’s Loop with at least five people shot, hundreds of juveniles rioting, and multiple police officers injured, according to a Chicago alderman.
The shooting happened a few hours after Friday evening’s annual tree lighting ceremony in Downtown Chicago.
Chicago’s 2nd Ward Alderman Brian Hopkins posted the following on his X account at 10:49 p.m.
“300 juveniles rioting in the Loop now, at least 5 victims shot, one critical with life threatening gunshot wound to torso. Multiple police officers attacked and injured with mace and stun guns, at least one PO hospitalized.”
Police have not confirmed details provided by Alderman Hopkins.
ABC7 Chicago said at least two people were shot on State Street, outside the TV station’s studios and the Chicago Theater. ABC7 crews said they saw people down on the ground in the street, and gunshots could be heard from the newsroom.
Several ambulances and a heavy police response could be seen in the area, with police tape wrapped across State Street and more than a dozen police vehicles parked near the Chicago Theater and Joffrey Ballet, reported NBC5 Chicago.
