It’s the second year of the 12-team College Football Playoff. When the CFP committee starts releasing rankings later this season, they won’t be the end-all, be-all, given the new seeding rules for the 12-team field. However, the rankings are still enjoyable, and people will continue to argue over them. They still matter.
So after every weekend, after the dust settles from the games, I’m going to unveil my updated top 10.
Ohio State was going to play two challenging games all season — Texas and Penn State. Those teams, both of which we believed were national title contenders at the start of the season, have been disappointments. The rest of the schedule has been, well, boring. Saturday’s 42-9 win over Rutgers was a snoozer without receivers Carnell Tate and Jeremiah Smith. It felt like the Buckeyes were trying to get out of Ohio Stadium with a boring win and everyone healthy. Next up is Michigan in Ann Arbor. Maybe Ohio State will finally play in an entertaining game this year?
Indiana entered the weekend 11-0 and didn’t play Saturday. The Hoosiers will now head into the rivalry weekend with a matchup with Purdue. For months, it has felt like Ohio State and Indiana were on a collision course in the Big Ten title game. Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza is also leading the way in the Heisman Trophy race. There is still a large contingent of people who can’t believe Indiana is this good, even with a win over Oregon on its resume. Big-time football is right around the corner.
A week ago, Texas A&M played in one of the most thrilling games of the season. It had to erase a 27-point halftime deficit to defeat South Carolina and got the job done. This week, the Aggies got Samford. There was no sweat poured in a 48-0 win. Next weekend, Texas A&M goes to Austin to play rival Texas, a game it feels like the Aggies have to have for personal reasons: to complete the perfect regular season, lock up its spot in the SEC title game and capture coveted bragging rights. Either way, they are headed to the College Football Playoff.
Georgia lost to Alabama earlier in the season and had a few scares since, but the Bulldogs keep winning. Last weekend, they beat up on Texas in Sanford Stadium. This weekend, they made short order of Charlotte. Georgia has only one loss in SEC play, but it still needs help to get to the conference title game. Ask Georgia fans, though, and they may tell you the path to the national title game is easier without having to go through Atlanta.
Ole Miss didn’t play a game on Saturday. Instead, the entire Rebels fan base is locked in on the Lane Kiffin drama as the head coach is currently being courted hard by LSU and Florida. Will Kiffin stay in Oxford? Who knows. Apparently, we’ll get an update after the Egg Bowl next week. But for the time being? Ole Miss is headed to the College Football Playoff and has a team good enough to make postseason noise, with or without Kiffin potentially.
On Saturday, the Red Raiders didn’t play, but they have blown out most of their opponents this year. Their only loss was to Arizona State without starting quarterback Behren Morton. This is the clear favorite to not only win the Big 12 but also make some noise in the CFP. Beat West Virginia next weekend and Texas Tech is off to the Big 12 Championship Game.
On Saturday afternoon against USC, in what was the biggest game of the slate, Oregon was the clearly superior team, winning 42-27. The Ducks still have a game against Washington. And while it doesn’t look like they are going to the Big Ten title game, they are one win away from being in the College Football Playoff.
How far has Oklahoma come since losing to Texas in the Red River Rivalry in October? At the time, it felt like it was going to be another long season for Brent Venables. Last weekend, he got his signature win over Alabama. On Saturday, the Sooners followed up that emotional win with another victory over Missouri, a team ranked in the CFP’s Top 25. The Sooners are one win away from punching their ticket to the CFP as they take on LSU in the regular season finale.
9. Miami (9-2)
Carson Beck connected with freshman receiver Malachi Toney on a touchdown with 20 seconds left remaining in the game. Miami won 34-17. Mario Cristobal didn’t have to throw one into the end zone there, but he appreciates that style points are important. He didn’t want to hear from box score watchers that the game was close, which it wasn’t. Miami is currently one of the more disrespected teams by the CFP Committee, so it added on points. Miami is a win over Pittsburgh away from a really compelling argument to make the CFP. I still have them ranked ahead of Notre Dame because of the comparable resumes and the head-to-head win.
Notre Dame absolutely embarrassed Syracuse on Saturday. The Irish were up 21-0 before even running an offensive play. Since losing the first two games on their schedule, they have been trying to win back everyone’s respect, win by win. That’s nine wins in a row now. There is no question this team is good enough to make another run in the College Football Playoff, even if Notre Dame has been a constant fixture in postseason debates. As long as Notre Dame wins its season-finale at Stanford (it will), there is a high likelihood it’ll be in the CFP.
