A house fire sent a 79-year-old man to the hospital with serious injuries on Saturday, officials said.
The blaze happened about 1 a.m. at a single-family house on Baldwin Avenue in Jersey City, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement on Sunday.
When firefighters arrived, they found smoke and fire in the basement of the home. During suppression efforts, the man was found unconscious with serious bodily injuries, officials said.
He is now at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston in critical, but stable condition, authorities said.
Officials did not comment on the extent of the damage to the home or say whether there were any other occupants.
The fire is still under investigation by the city fire department and Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force. It does not appear suspicious in nature, prosecutors said.
