Around NYC
1. Hochul explores statewide universal child care options
Gov. Kathy Hochul and Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani say child care is too expensive for New Yorkers, and want to beef up government programs so families with children who want help can get it.
“We are on a path to universal child care,” Hochul said.
But many plans would be expensive: estimated to cost billions of dollars statewide.
2. Prosecutors will retry man in death of Etan Patz, whose 1979 disappearance spotlighted missing kids
A notorious 1979 missing-child case will go to trial a third time after New York prosecutors vowed Tuesday to retry the man whose murder conviction was recently overturned in the disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz.
In a case that has long been gnarled by time and uncertainty, a new set of prosecutors now will need to bring back witnesses, elicit memories and try to persuade another jury that Pedro Hernandez lured and killed the boy as he walked to his New York City school bus stop.
3. AG James leads fight against limits on state AI laws as New York charts a regulatory path forward
New York Attorney General Letitia James on Tuesday led a bipartisan coalition of 36 attorneys general in urging Congress to reject language in the National Defense Authorization Act, which would prevent states from passing or enforcing laws which govern artificial intelligence.
It comes as congressional leaders consider adding language to the annual bill which would preempt state laws governing AI and President Donald Trump considers an executive order which would create a taskforce to challenge them.
