This year’s Thanksgiving holiday is sure be a busy one for tavelers, with experts predicting that over 80 million people will be leaving home for the long weekend. So, of course the New York Thruway, which connects most of the state’s major cities, is sure to be jammed.

In preparation, Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced that state troopers and other local law enforcement agencies in New York will increase patrols to target impaired and reckless driving over the holiday period, including on the Thruway.

All planned construction closures on the roadway will be suspended starting at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, according to a press release from the governor’s office.

The pause on construction is expected to continue through 6 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 1.

In anticipation of the busy travel period, all rest stops and service areas on the Thruway will be open to travelers. To see the location of rest areas and the amenities they provide, drivers can visit thruway.ny.gov/travelers/travelplazas to plan their trip.

Travelers can also see live traffic conditions for the New York Thruway by visiting thruway.ny.gov/travelers/map and clicking on the traffic condition option.
