Celebrations of the life and legacy of former Arlington Mayor Elzie Odom begin Wednesday, a week and a half after his death at age 96.
Odom was the first Black mayor and first Black City Council member elected in Arlington, the area’s third-largest city.
He will lie in state at Arlington City Hall on Abram Street on Wednesday afternoon from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. during a public memorial.
A visitation wake will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 28, at Mount Olive Baptist Church on Sanford Street. A homegoing celebration will be held on Saturday, Nov. 29, with visitation from 10 a.m. until noon at Mount Olive Baptist Church. The service will be at noon.
In his honor, the city said its flag will remain at half-staff, and all lighted gateway monuments — including the towers in front of City Hall — will stay dark until his memorial service.
