Melissa-based Value Feeds, a leading dairy upcycling company with a “food to feed” approach, has been acquired by Pendleton, Indiana-based Nutrition 101 LLC, a national provider of eco-friendly waste management services.

Value Feeds, which has a plant in Dallas, has strategic supply contracts from the region’s leading dairy producers. It offers dairy producers a sustainable and efficient solution for managing their dairy waste. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Value Feeds founder Mark Quinn said Nutrition 101’s industry expertise will allow the company expand its processing capabilities. “I look forward to continuing Value Feeds’ mission with the support of the 101 team,” he added in a statement.

Nutrition 101 said the acquisition will enable the company to continue its strategic growth into the Southwest region while building upon Value Feeds’ strong customer relationships, efficient operations, and environmentally friendly solutions, which are reflected in its robust processing capabilities and established foothold in a growing market.

“Value Feeds has proven itself in its over 30-year history as the market-dominant player with fantastic operations,” Nutrition 101 CEO Rick Shipley said. “By bringing its capabilities, unmatched reputation, and customer relationships into the 101 family, we’ll be able to continue helping food processors manage byproducts while providing farmers high-quality proteins and energy for livestock in a new and growing market.”

Value Feeds has grown to be one of the industry leaders in dairy upcycling, expanding its incoming milk supply through strategic contracts with leading dairy producers in the Southwest region of the U.S.

Converting waste to resource

Value Feeds said it was established in 1989 as “alternative feeds” with a focus on researching and developing alternative feed sources for feeder cattle rations and calf ranches, aiming to replace traditional feed commodities.

It operates with a “Food to Feed” approach, converting food industry by-products into feed for various cattle operations. Since 1989, Melissa Feeders/Value Feeds has partnered with former divisions of Oak Farms to reclaim out-of-date milk for use in baby calf feed.

Nutrition 101 is a private food waste and recycling company that develops custom programs for food manufacturers to proactively manage residuals from their process, maximize opportunities for recovery and upcycling, and develop high-quality feeds for end users to create long-term solutions for waste reduction and reuse.
