New York admitted more refugees from Syria than any other nation during the period from last October to December, according to federal data.

A total of 424 refugees from Syria entered New York during that span. Myanmar was No. 2 at 344 and the Democratic Republic of Congo was third with 288.

New York admitted a total of 1,870 refugees from 34 nations between October and December. That was the third-highest total in the nation behind Texas and California, both of which admitted over 2,000 refugees.

The nation as a whole took in more than 27,000.

The numbers come from the federal Refugee Processing Center, which produces regular reports on where refugees to the U.S. come from. The center is a part of the State Department.

The report on the period from October 2024 to December 2024 is the most recent available.

The latest batch of refugees to enter the U.S. could be one of the last for some time. President Donald Trump ordered a stop to new refugees entering the country soon after taking office.

Refugees and advocates challenged the order in court and a judge ordered the nation’s refugee program to restart, but that hasn’t happened yet.

Trump campaigned last year on promises of a tough immigration crackdown. Authorities have targeted regions around the country with new tactics, including Upstate New York.
