A woman died in a hit-and-run in University City on Thanksgiving, Philadelphia police said.

The 41-year-old woman, who police say they believe worked nearby and was on her lunch break, was hit while crossing Market Street on 36th Street just after 4 p.m., authorities said.

The driver who struck the victim continued eastbound on Market Street before hitting another car near 33rd Street, according to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small. The driver attempted to flee on foot but was taken into police custody about a block away, Small said.

Witnesses told police the suspect was speeding and driving recklessly.

At least one person was in the car the suspect hit at 33rd Street but is OK, Small said.

Crash investigators are on the scene talking to witnesses, Small said. Additionally, numerous businesses in the area have cameras that likely captured both crashes, he said.

“It’s very, very tragic, the fact that this is a fatal hit-and-run, the fact that it happened on Thanksgiving Day just makes it that much more of a tragedy,” Small said.

The crash happened near the site of the hit-and-run that killed 48-year-old Meaza Brown of South Philadelphia last week. Police say Brown was walking to work early on Nov. 20 with a group of coworkers when she was hit by a silver Chrysler 300 sedan that ran a red light at 33rd and Market streets.
