If you read my columns regularly, you know it takes a lot to get me excited about a house. When I found this Lakewood Heights modern Craftsman, I was smitten, and not just because it has a full pilates studio over the garage!

LeAnna McComas always dreamed of living in East Dallas. When she and her husband began house hunting, she knew immediately this was the one. “I love the Craftsman style,” McComas said. “It gives you the feeling of family and home.”

Despite its historic look, the home was built in 2002 with the open-plan design that was so popular then. “It was a hodge-podge of different design aesthetics,” McComas said. “We basically rebuilt it and turned it back into more of what an original historic Craftsman home would look like. From the foundation up, it’s all new.”

The couple turned to Chip Jones and Lisa Floyd at Baker Design Group, who, as you can see, knocked it out of the park because this Lakewood Heights modern Craftsman oozes charm and character now, from the cozy front porch to the stylish coop currently housing five chickens!

Even the laundry room is stylish!

Although the whole 4,215-square-foot,  four-bedroom, four-and-a-half bath modern Craftsman captured McComas’ heart, it was a specific feature that completely sealed the deal.

“There was a space above the garage I knew I could make into a Pilates studio,” McComas said. And, boy, did she make a terrific studio.

McComas went back and forth to New York for a year in 2016 to train in classical Pilates and has been teaching privately for years since. The Pilates studio had been a full guest quarters prior to the conversion, so the plumbing is there, should you want to change it back.

There is not a single spot in this home I don’t love, from the resort-style powder bath with that fabulous floral wallpaper to the charming kitchen and the third-floor attic. There is a kitchenette with a dishwasher and work area, as well as a projector for movie nights! If you have teenagers, you will never see them because they will be camped out up here.

Dave Perry-Miller Realtor Rhoni Golden sold the couple this fantastic home and has her own favorite spots.

“If I had to pick only one spot, it would be the screened porch off the master on the second floor,” Golden said. “It’s so cozy, but there are so many cozy outdoor spots, it’s hard to choose. Then, of course, her husband tricked out the garage completely.”

It is, in fact, the ultimate man cave with a TV, a water filtration system, and even a dog bath for the three pups.

The best part of this Lakewood Heights modern Craftsman may be what else is on offer. “You can buy all of the furniture, minus the artwork and the Pilates equipment,” Golden said. “So essentially someone can arrive with their toothbrush and move right in!”
