The Chicago Cubs made some history of their own with a home run barrage against the St. Louis Cardinals, but Michael Busch etched his name in history too.
The Cubs bashed eight home runs against the Cardinals on the Fourth of July, setting a team record for most home runs in a single game.
Of those, Busch was responsible for three of them as the Cubs cruised to an 11-3 victory on the holiday.
According to Baseball Reference’s Stathead tool, Busch became just the third Cubs player to hit three home runs in a game against the Cardinals, joining Moises Alou and Hank Leiber in that category.
The kicker? All three times a Cubs player has hit three home runs against the Cardinals, the games have been played on the Fourth of July at Wrigley Field.
Alou’s three-homer game came on July 4, 2003, though the Cubs lost 11-8 in that game. Leiber smacked three home runs in the first game of a doubleheader on July 4, 1939, but the Cubs lost that game as well.
Joining Busch in the home run parade were Seiya Suzuki, Dansby Swanson and Carson Kelly. Pete Crow-Armstrong also hit a pair of home runs in the game, with the Cubs collecting their fourth straight win to open their homestand at the Friendly Confines.
