The FAA said the average delay ranges from 15-43 minutes.

FlightAware data showed that 650 flights have been delayed and 74 canceled as of 5:38 p.m.

The stop comes as a strong cold front is expected to bring freezing temperatures, rain and wind to the area Saturday night.

The same front has brought a major snowstorm to the Midwest and Great Lakes, bringing winter to some holiday travelers.

As of Saturday morning, more than 8 inches of snow had hit northern Iowa, and at least that much snow was expected in Chicago as well as other parts of Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan.
