Monday’s two tornadoes show the tornado threat is real, even if tonight’s probability is low (2%).We still need to be weather-aware.
1. Nighttime tornadoes are 2–3 times deadlier because warnings were missed while people were fast asleep, missed the warning and couldn’t take cover.
2. Standard phone alerts wake only about 35% of people, according to a 2023 FEMA/IPAWS national survey found Wireless Emergency Alerts
most phones are silenced or on Do Not Disturb.
3. Nighttime power outages take ~70% longer to restore, according to Center Point Energy’s 2024 data. Hurricane Beryl and derecho showed restoration times almost 70% longer because of poor visibility and reduce overnight staffing.

This means you need to prepare ahead of tonight’s storm:
1. Get a weather radio as your first line of defense.
2.Turn OFF your Do Not Disturb and turn UP your volume on your phone.
3.Pick your safe space now ahead of the storm and practice a tornado drill.
→ Lowest floor, interior room with no windows (bathroom, closet, hallway, or basement)
4.Stock up on batteries for flashlights, battery radios, headlamps and glow sticks – so you’re prepared should you lose power.
