The Cedar Hill Police Department said an officer fatally shot an individual following a vehicle and foot pursuit Thursday afternoon.

The unidentified officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation, per standard protocol, according to a news release.

Police said officers started pursuing a driver who was believed to be impaired at around 2 p.m. in the 700 block of U.S. Highway 67.

Around 15 minutes later, the vehicle pursuit ended near the intersection of Town Creek Drive and Glen Oaks Blvd in Dallas, the news release said. It said the driver then fled on foot into a nearby wooded area.

It was during this foot chase that the officer fired his weapon, striking the man, police said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, despite receiving aid, according to the news release. Police have not confirmed the individual’s identity as of 5:30 p.m. Thursday, but described him as a white man.

Cedar Hill police said the Dallas Police Department Special Investigations Unit, with oversight from the Dallas County Public Integrity Division, will lead the investigation into the shooting.
