One of Puerto Rico’s most iconic beachfront hotels has a stylish new sheen — as well as a new brand affiliation. This summer, La Concha Resort swapped its previous affiliation with Marriott’s Renaissance Hotels to join the brand’s Autograph Collection Hotels, following an $80.2 million renovation that has touched nearly every part of the property.
After a visit several years ago, La Concha quickly became one of my favorite hotels in the San Juan metro area, so I was pleased to find during my most recent stay that the upgrades and rebranding have enhanced what was already a very attractive offering.
First opened in 1958, what is now known as La Concha Resort, Puerto Rico, Autograph Collection is a stunning example of tropical modern architecture from architects Osvaldo Toro and Miguel Ferrer. With its innovative design elements and a prime beachfront location in the popular neighborhood of Condado, La Concha serves as a perfect base for indulging, relaxing on the beach and exploring the many nearby restaurants, bars and shops.
The recent revamp provides an impressive update to the tropical modern aesthetic, with an array of new features — including a brand-new spa and convenient wristbands that serve as room keys — as well as beautifully reimagined spaces that include redecorated guestrooms and sophisticated new restaurant concepts.
A Fresh Look
My husband, Angel, and I felt the hotel’s rejuvenated blend of midcentury glamour and modern luxury from the moment we arrived. The expansive lobby has always wowed; today, it’s a glistening vision in creams and whites, seamlessly incorporating a lobby bar that serves as a social hub — decidedly relaxed during the day, and taking on a hip lounge vibe after dark. A new daily cocktail experience has debuted at the bar, allowing guests to choose from five infusions and select drinks designed to align with various moods: Social, Adventurous, Introvert, Passionate and Life of the Party.

Checking into our room in the renovated Suite Tower reminded me of another thing I love about this hotel: the gorgeous beach and ocean views. The tower’s 238 redesigned rooms and suites now sport a tranquil, modern style that evokes the color palette of the ocean in a tasteful, understated way.
Our suite featured a comfortable living room with a large television, a large couch that converted into a pullout bed and a polished, stainless-steel bar cart stocked with local rum. I found the bathroom especially beautiful; its custom marble flooring and oversize shower was design-forward yet supremely inviting. The spacious bedroom opened to a balcony with sweeping views of the broad beach and Atlantic Ocean.
New Culinary and Wellness Options
La Concha has always been the kind of hotel that encourages relaxation and unhurried exploration. We unwound at the property’s multiple outdoor pools and also made good use of the hotel’s direct beach access; the dedicated beach lounge chairs and attentive service made a day on the sand seem especially indulgent.
One of La Concha’s most important additions is the brand-new Elemara Spa & Salon, which debuted this year. I appreciated the open-air relaxation space that overlooks the beach, and my treatment was exactly the kind of restorative moment I needed after days of travel and work. My therapist was attentive in a way that felt both professional and bespoke, and he even offered tension-reducing ideas I could take home.
A well-equipped fitness center rounds out the hotel’s wellness-oriented facilities. Also ranking high on the list of changes is La Concha’s impressive array of new food and beverage offerings. Across nine restaurants and bars, the resort now delivers an elevated, diverse dining landscape.

The culinary revamp has brought exciting new life to one of Puerto Rico’s most iconic dining venues: The eye-catching, gigantic shell-shaped structure on the beach — once known as Perla — has reopened as Levant by Chef Michael White, helmed by the namesake Michelin-starred chef.
The unique, upscale ambience is a big draw at Levant; during our memorable dinner, soft amber-hued lighting illuminated the dramatically curved walls and ceilings, gradually shifting toward cooler tones as we progressed through a sophisticated, Mediterranean-influenced menu with dishes designed for sharing. On our visit, the casarecce pasta and the lamb rack were among the standouts. So was the service: The staff was exceedingly attentive and friendly, as well as knowledgeable about the venue’s gastronomic offerings.

We also savored a beautiful dinner at another reimagined venue: AQA Oceanfront, a casual-yet-stylish restaurant open for brunch and dinner. I found the pork belly crisp and flavorful, and the juey chowder a delightful introduction to blue crab. Angel, meanwhile, declared his Patio Martini — made with vodka, mixed vegetable brine, dry vermouth and olive oil drops — one of the best he has had.
An important culinary note: La Concha’s connection to the broader Condado Collection means guests can also charge meals to their room if they visit Condado Vanderbilt Hotel and Condado Ocean Club, both of which are a short walk away. It’s a nice plus for clients looking to conveniently expand their dining options.
What impressed me throughout our stay at La Concha was how well the renovation has preserved the hotel’s original architecture and midcentury-chic identity. From the details of the brise-soleil façade to the fashionable swoop of the La Concha lettering on the signage, the hotel stands as a prime example of how to elevate and refresh the resort experience while still maintaining and enhancing its eternally, enticingly cool vibe.
