LA CROSSE, Wis. (CITY OF LA CROSSE PRESS RELEASE) – As winter settles in, La Crosse Parks, Recreation and Forestry is working to raise awareness about the impact excessive road salt has on our waterways, infrastructure, vegetation, and local wildlife. Through our Salt Smart initiative, we aim to help residents and businesses understand these effects and learn practical ways to use salt more responsibly.
The Salt Smart campaign encourages residents and businesses to use alternative methods of snow and ice removal, such as sand and non-toxic deicers, and to share information surrounding responsible salt use this winter season. Residents and businesses can participate in this initiative by taking the Salt Smart Pledge and vowing to keep sidewalks and driveways safe this winter, while also protecting our environment.
In support of this effort, the City of La Crosse Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department, in partnership with Habitat for Humanity and La Crosse Area Waters, would like to invite you to attend the “Salt Smart” kick-off event. The event will be held on Wednesday, December 10th at 4:00pm at the Black River Beach Neighborhood Center (1433 Rose Street, La Crosse, WI, 54601).
Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an educational session, followed by hands-on salt activities and a brine making workshop. The Salt Smart event is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged, but not required. Participants can register in-person, online via Parks Department’s registration website, or over the phone by calling 608-789-7533. All necessary materials for brine making will be provided. Individuals, neighborhoods and community groups are encouraged to attend and take advantage of this experience.
Learn more about salting smart, and take the Salt Smart pledge by visiting the Parks and Recreation’s Winter Sustainability Page. Once you’ve pledged to salt smart, pick up your 12 oz. Salt Cup in the lobby of City Hall during open hours. One cup available per household, and will be available while supplies last beginning Monday, December 8th.
