U.S. Rep. Julie Johnson on Friday filed to run for the Democratic primary nomination for Dallas County-anchored District 33.

The Farmers Branch Democrat currently represents District 32. That district was radically redrawn this summer to cut out much of Dallas County. It now extends deep into East Texas and favors a Republican candidate.

The midterm primary election will be Tuesday, March 3.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday allowed Texas’ new congressional map to remain in place, reversing an injunction by a lower court. That prompted Johnson to make a final decision about her political future.

“Texas-33 is home to many families, small businesses, and neighborhoods that I have been proud to represent over the years,” Johnson wrote in a statement. “I’m running in TX-33 because these communities need someone who shows up, listens, and never stops fighting for them–no matter how the lines are drawn.”

Johnson is serving her first term in Congress.

The deadline to file for the March primaries is Monday, Dec. 8.
