PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — A vacant lot along Elfreth’s Alley is set to become Dolly Ottey Park, honoring the woman credited with saving the nation’s oldest residential street from demolition.
The site at North Second Street and Elfreth’s Alley will feature a crushed stone base, picnic tables, planters and repairs to a crumbling brick wall.
Approval for the project took eight years and required multiple groups to sign on.
The timing comes as America 250 approaches in the months ahead.
The project is expected to cost $60,000, with fundraising efforts underway online.
Organizers hope to break ground in February and finish by March.
