There are baseball laughs, and then there are Canadian baseball laughs — the kind that land like a snowball to the face and still somehow simultaneously warm your heart.

This year’s holiday season delivered one of those moments, starring Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman, a trio of fearless Toronto kids, and Hollywood’s favorite mischief-maker, Ryan Reynolds, all coming together for the A-list actor’s annual SickKids Foundation fundraiser. And if you never expected to hear children call Freeman a “hoser,” well… welcome to the video you didn’t know you needed.

The setup unfolds inside Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, where Reynolds — wrapped in his now-iconic Ugly Christmas Sweater — introduces Freeman as “the pride of Ontario… and Los Angeles.” It’s a line dripping with affection, geography, and just enough sarcasm to make a Canadian nod with approval.

But the kids? They weren’t buying any of it.

The moment Freeman steps into the room, three young Blue Jays fans rise up like a tiny, unfiltered jury of the North. They boo him with the conviction of a fan base still stinging from the gut-wrenching result of the 2025 Fall Classic when the Dodgers knocked off the Blue Jays in the World Series. And then one little girl, clutching her fandom like a fastball, delivers the line heard ’round the holidays:

“Go back to your sunshine and traffic, you hoser!”

It hangs in the air like a breaking ball, perfect and mean and hilarious. Even Freeman can’t help but grin as the kids chase him out chanting, “Let’s go Blue Jays!” It’s the kind of harmless trolling that feels stitched straight out of a winter sitcom — and yet, underneath it all, there’s real heart.

That’s what Reynolds does best. He turns comedy into connection. He takes a moment of silliness and roots it in something bigger: compassion, community, the kind of giving that echoes far beyond a punchline.

This is the seventh straight year Reynolds has used his charm, humor, and increasingly legendary sweater to boost SickKids’ holiday campaign, following past collaborations with Seth Rogen, Michael Bublé, Lynda Carter, Deadpool, and Kidpool. This time around, his choice of partner — a three-time World Series champion with Canadian roots — made the roast feel like family business.

Freeman, whose parents were both born in Canada and who once suited up for Team Canada in the World Baseball Classic, didn’t hesitate. His adopted city of Los Angeles may shine a little brighter, but his heart carries the quiet dignity of the north. And in this video, that meant letting Toronto’s smallest superfans dunk on him for charity.

The payoff is more than laughs. This year’s SickKids “Sweater Love” campaign raises money for life-changing equipment at the Toronto hospital. And thanks to an anonymous donor, every one-time gift made before midnight on December 24 will be matched — up to $1 million.

Ryan Reynolds calls it a tradition. Freddie Freeman calls it fun. But for the kids at SickKids, this campaign means something deeper — a lifeline disguised as a laugh.

And in this holiday moment, that’s the only victory that matters.
