The Townsville to Mount Isa rail line remains closed after a train carrying mineral products derailed on Friday afternoon.

One locomotive was on its side and another two left the track but remained upright, Queensland Rail (QR) said.

The derailment happened at Warrigal between the towns of Pentland and Torrens Creek about 1pm on Friday.

QR head of regional Scott Cornish said freight and passenger services had stopped over the weekend, with further track assessments to be done.

“Emergency services arrived onsite soon after. Thankfully no injuries were reported,” Mr Cornish said.

The service, operated by Qube Holdings, was carrying zinc and copper from Mount Isa.

One wagon was also derailed but remained upright.

State Emergency Service volunteers were called in case of a major fuel spill, however this was not an issue, police said.

Bus service running

Mr Cornish said the weekend passenger services on the Inlander were replaced by a bus.

“Queensland Rail will work with the third-party operator to confirm a recovery plan once inspections are completed,” he said.

In a statement Qube Holdings said it was fortunate the train crew was uninjured.

“Recovery efforts are continuing at the site, and we are naturally working with relevant agencies to support investigations into the cause of the incident,” a spokesperson said.
