The Philadelphia Eagles’ defense was very good on Monday night. It just needed the offense to come through with one clutch drive in overtime.

That was too much to ask.

The Eagles got just one touchdown in regulation, as they were unable to put the Los Angeles Chargers away. After the Chargers took a lead on a field goal for their first possession of overtime, a touchdown would have won the game and a field goal would have tied it. Instead, Jalen Hurts threw his fourth interception of the game with the Eagles in field-goal range. Just like that, Philadelphia was dealt another disappointing loss, falling 22-19 to the Chargers.

The Eagles are still likely to make the playoffs. It’s not out of the question they can make a Super Bowl run. But the story of their whole season, and their problem going forward, is the disappearance of the offense. It doesn’t seem like it’s fixable, either.

Both teams struggle on offense

One play from the first half summed up a sloppy offensive game.

Hurts threw an interception right to defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand, who had dropped into a zone coverage. Hand started to run with the ball and he was stripped for a fumble that Hurts recovered. But Hurts was stripped as well, and the Chargers fell on that fumble. It was the rare NFL play in which there were three separate turnovers, including two by Hurts.

Hurts had a rough game overall. He had two interceptions and the lost fumble after his interception. He had a 35.2 passer rating through three quarters and the Eagles had not scored a touchdown. He finished with five total turnovers and a hideous 31.3 QB rating.

The Chargers weren’t much better. They got an early touchdown run from rookie Omarion Hampton, who was returning from an ankle injury that had sidelined him since Week 5. That score came on the Chargers’ first drive, and their offense was mostly cold after that. Justin Herbert was playing a week after getting surgery on his broken left hand, and that injury seemed to affect him. What affected him more was the Eagles’ pass rush, which put him under constant pressure.

Hampton’s touchdown held up as the difference through three quarters, as the Chargers led 13-9. But the Eagles struck quickly in the fourth quarter.

Eagles and Saquon Barkley break through

Finally, the Eagles got what has been lacking most of the season: a long touchdown from Saquon Barkley. On the first play of the fourth quarter, the Eagles hurried to the line from the huddle on third-and-1, in a tush push formation. But in a moment of creativity that the Eagles’ offense has lacked most of the season, Hurts instead pitched it wide to Barkley. The Chargers were caught off guard and Barkley ran down the sideline for a 52-yard touchdown. Philadelphia led 16-13 after that. Barkley had just one other touchdown of 50 or more yards this season, and that came in Week 8 against the Giants.

That was it for touchdowns in regulation, but the Chargers got a field goal after Hurts’ third interception of the game — Hurts threw only two picks in the first 13 weeks of the season — and then the Eagles and Chargers traded field goals in the final three minutes. The Chargers’ game-tying FG with eight seconds left sent the game to overtime.

The Eagles won the coin toss to start overtime and chose to kick off. Runs by Herbert and Hampton picked up a quick 30 yards. But the Eagles tightened up and the Chargers settled for a 54-yard field goal.

Philadelphia seemed to have a big first down on a Hurts run, but a holding call brought it back and forced the Eagles into a third-and-16. Afterward, Hurts made one of his best throws of the season, hitting DeVonta Smith over the middle for 28 yards. On fourth-and-4, with the Eagles on the edge of Jake Elliott’s field-goal range, they planned to go for it. Chargers lineman Odafe Oweh jumped offsides, giving the Eagles a huge first down. But later in the drive the Chargers pressured Hurts, his pass was tipped up by cornerback Cam Hart and it was intercepted by Tony Jefferson to end the game.

It was a rough way for the Eagles’ offense to end the night. But the entire season has been rough for that unit.

The Chargers have won the game! Hart tipped it up, and Jefferson came up with the interception near the goal line to seal the win for the Chargers in overtime. What a wild finish.

The Eagles could have tied it with a 60-yard field goal, but they opted to go for it on fourth down instead.

They then got the Chargers to jump early, and now have a first down. What a huge play.

Hurts connects with Smith, and the Eagles are across midfield safely. This game isn’t over yet.

Jalen Hurts had AJ Brown deep there for a first down and then some, but he missed just missed him. Hurts scrambled for a first down on the next play, but it was brought back on a hold.

So it’s now third and 16 for the Eagles, who need a field goal to stay alive here.

The Chargers crossed midfield easily, but their drive stalled out after the Eagles brought Herbert down on a scramble there on third down.

Cameron Dicker drilled a 54-yarder, though, so the Chargers are back in the lead.

The Eagles have won the toss, and the Chargers will get the ball first in overtime. Here we go…

The Chargers got into Cameron Dicker’s field-goal range, and Dicker delivered from 46 yards for his fourth made field goal of the night on four attempts. The game’s tied at 19 with 8 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Eagles took a knee with 3 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.

A.J. Brown dropped a sure touchdown on a deep ball from Jalen Hurts that was his best throw of the night. The gamble on second-and-11 backfired, and the Eagles were forced to settle for a field goal.

Jake Elliott was good from 44 yards to give Philadelphia a 19-16 lead. The Chargers will have 2: 16 to respond.

One of these offenses has to step up. The Chargers will punt back to the Eagles after matching Philadelphia’s 3-and-out. Justin Herbert just got sacked for the seventh time tonight.

Can Philadelphia put something together to take a late lead with 3:33 remaining? Giving the ball back to Saquon Barkley isn’t the worst idea.

More ineptitude from the Eagles offense.

Jalen Hurts had time on third-and-6, but couldn’t find anyone open downfield, and the Eagles have punted in a 16-16 game with 5:46 remaining. The Chargers have a chance to go ahead late.

The Chargers didn’t get a touchdown, but they converted Cam Hart’s interception into a 31-yard Cameron Dicker field goal to tie the game at 16 with 7:26 remaining.

Jalen Hurts just committed his fourth turnover over the night. But this one’s on A.J. Brown. Brown failed to handle high heat from Hurts, and the ball bounced off his hands into those of second-year Chargers cornerback Cam Hart.

Just when the Eagles had a chance to seize control, they gave momentum right back to the Chargers. The interception was the first of Hart’s career. It was the third of the night thrown by Hurts on top of a lost fumble.

This is a first tonight. The Eagles now have the ball and the lead after forcing a Chargers punt. They’ll now look to extend their 16-13 advantage with 11:49 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Can they build off the momentum of Saquon Barkley’s 52-yard touchdown run?

  • Jason OwensMon, December 8, 2025 at 7:41 PM PST

Here’s a concept. Give the ball to the reigning Offensive Player of the Year.

The Eagles did just that to start the fourth quarter, and Saquon Barkley rewarded the decision with a 52-yard run for Philadelphia’s first touchdown of the night on a sweep from a bunch formation.

The Eagles’ offense may be broken, but there’s nothing wrong with Barkley tonight. He’s up to 117 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, and the Eagles have a 16-13 lead early in the fourth quarter, their first of the night.

Justin Herbert took contact on his fractured left hand and came up grimacing after a big hit on a scramble that forced a fumble that the Chargers recovered.

On his next handoff to Omarion Hampton, he didn’t use his injured hand where he normally would. Herbert had surgery to repair a fracture in the hand just last Monday. He’s clearly and understandably bothered by the injury.

The Eagles have the ball back after a Chargers punt and a chance to take the lead, trailing 13-9. To do so, they’ll have to score their first touchdown of the game.

The Eagles started the second half strong with a 26-yard pass from Jalen Hurts to A.J. Brown on their first offensive play of the half. But from there, things fizzled out as an incompletion on first down and a 4-yard loss on second ultimately set Jake Elliott up for a 54-yard field goal attempt.

His third field goal of the night was good, and the Chargers lead 13-9 late in the third quarter.
