CAMDEN, NJ — A credit card skimmer was found Monday in a 7-Eleven store at Rutgers University-Camden, leaving customers susceptible to fraud, police said.

Card skimmers are inconspicuous tools used to steal credit, debit and EBT card information. The devices are illegally placed at payment points such as ATMs and card readers to capture victims’ personal data and PINs.

Offenders use that information to create fake cards and then steal from victims’ accounts. Here’s the FBI’s info page.

A skimmer was found at 12:21 p.m. Monday at the checkout counter payment terminal in 7-Eleven on 330 Cooper St., according to Rutgers police. The store is part of the university campus but is accessible to the greater public.

Police are investigating when the device was placed, said Police Chief Matthew Gulsby.

“It is early in the investigation, but no suspect description is known at this moment,” Gulsby said late Monday afternoon.

In the meantime, anyone who recently shopped there should check with their respective credit card companies for any unusual activity on their accounts, Gulsby said.

To report any suspicious credit card fraud-related activity from this incident, call the Rutgers University Police Department at 856-225-6111.
