As the first wave of several school closures in the Fort Worth Independent School District approaches for next school year, the school board has finalized new attendance boundaries for impacted families.

Four elementary campuses will close at the end of the current school year, shifting students to neighboring schools: Edward Briscoe Elementary, Milton Kirkpatrick Elementary, Charles Nash Elementary and Riverside Applied Learning Center. The closures are part of the district’s facilities master plan that includes shuttering a total of 18 schools over the next four years, two of which already closed at the end of the 2024-25 school year.

The school board on Tuesday unanimously approved new attendance boundary maps for students currently attending the four closing schools. The board also approved the closure of Western Hills Primary, which will be consolidated into Western Hills Elementary in the fall, at its Tuesday meeting. No board members shared comments on either action.

The school closings were prompted by declining enrollment, which created underutilized campuses and loss of revenue for the district, which is one of the 10 largest school districts in Texas. Officials say consolidating campuses has allowed the district to redirect millions of dollars into its academic priorities.

During public comment on Tuesday, a fifth-grade student at Riverside Applied Learning Center told the school board he doesn’t understand its decision to close the A-rated campus. He highlighted the applied learning model that embraces hands-on learning rather than just taking notes in a notebook; the model will be transferred to Bonnie Brae Elementary where students will attend next school year.

“It’s also crazy how y’all decided to merge us into a C-rated school when we are an A-rated campus. In my opinion, y’all should think about your actions before closing my school,” he said.

Here’s where students at these schools will be attending next year.
